JavaOne 2011 and Oracle OpenWorld: October 2-6, 2011

JavaOne 2011 is scheduled for October 2-6, 2011, in San Francisco. It appears that JavaOne will again be held in conjunction with Oracle OpenWorld. There is also evidence that JavaOne will again not be in the Moscone due to co-located Oracle OpenWorld: the JavaOne and Oracle Develop Exhibition Floor Map shows the exhibition area being in the Continental Ballroom of the Hilton San Francisco Union Square (the exhibition contract also verifies this). Although many had hoped that JavaOne 2011 would NOT be co-located with Oracle OpenWorld or that they would be held consecutively rather than simultaneously, it definitely seems that the conferences will be co-located again.

Just a day after this post, Adam Bien has posted a JavaOne 2011 Wish List. In a comment on this post, Martijn Verburg states: "Was on a call with Oracle community reps and the JUG leaders discussing JavaOne. _Nothing_ is finalised yet but Oracle are definitely seriously looking into JavaOne as a separate event from OW and having a new venue/time."

Michael Coté has posted Fireside at the Java Community - Press Pass in which he provides "complete answers" related to the Java and Oracle, One Year Later telecast. Among other things, he writes (portions removed), "JavaOne used to be the event for Java developers, and a significant one for the development world in general. Folding it into Oracle OpenWorld sends the wrong signal (Oracle is more important than Java) and probably makes some Java people not want to attend. The Java world is much bigger than the Oracle world and it definitely deserves it’s own conference, if only in name."

In Oracle Speaks Out on Java, One Year Later...Sort Of, John K. Waters reports that Oracle's Ajay Patel stated that "calling for a separate [from Oracle OpenWorld] JavaOne conference" is "the number one conversation in the [Oracle] executive offices."

The article Oracle floats Java EE for cloud reiterates this point (portions removed): "Oracle is still uncertain about what to do about the iconic JavaOne Conference it inherited from Sun." Patel is quoted in this article as saying that changes of JavaOne timing/venue is "the number-one conversation happening in the executive ranks" and "We are looking at a choice of a September JavaOne in an environment that's much more suited to networking. ... I can assure you this is getting the highest attention."

Martijn Verburg has posted a comment on Mario Fusco's post 10 Unanswered Questions to Oracle in which Martijn writes about JavaOne 2011: "They're working with the JUG leaders/community to resolve this, I'm pretty confident that the next JavaOne will be a separate event (might be 2012 though) and be community driven in terms of content etc."

In the post Oracle to float cloud-ready Java EE in 2013: Death for JavaOne, Gavin Clarke states that Oracle's holding of JavaOne 2010 in conjunction with Oracle OpenWorld 2010 "made JavaOne a logistical nightmare for Java devs, who complained about the event." He adds, "According to our source, Oracle has been telling people it may cancel JavaOne because of negative feedback about last year's event and the fact that it can't find a suitable time or location for this year's event."

Oracle has released its call for papers for Oracle OpenWorld 2011. This press release confirms several issues related to Oracle OpenWorld 2011:
* October 2-6, 2011
* Moscone Center, San Francisco
* Dedicated MySQL Track

I see no mention of JavaOne 2011.

Mark Stephens has posted "Five Reasons to Sign Up for JavaOne 2011 today." In addition to reasons he cites for attending his first JavaOne since 2008, Stephens mentions that the "Super Saver" Discount is advertised to be ending tomorrow (1 April 2011).

It seems increasingly unlikely that Oracle will be holding JavaOne 2011 in early October even though the JavaOne and Oracle Develop Registration page still states that is the case. There still has been no call for papers and the JavaOne-specific page is still titled "JavaOne 2010."

The apparent JavaOne 2011 registration page continues to list the Super Saver registration rate going through tomorrow (April 1) and the Early Bird registration expiring on July 29.

The article Oracle Senior VP Steve Harris on Oracle’s Vision of Java includes mention of JavaOne in covering Oracle Senior VP Steven G. Harris's talk at International Oracle Users Group Community (IOUC) Summit.

The big announcement has finally arrived! As discussed in The Java Source's JavaOne 2011, the JavaOne Conference Blog's JavaOne 2011 - October 2nd to 6th in San Francisco, and The Aquarium's JavaOne 2011 - San Francisco October 2-6, 2011, JavaOne 2011 will be held October 2-6, 2011, in San Francisco. Although held in the same city and at the same time as Oracle OpenWorld, it will be considered completely separate. Oracle Develop has also changed venues.
